¡°IP Protection is one of the central pillars which knowledge based industries and markets rest and well-constructed IPR regime with sound understanding of the importance of IPR is indispensable for economic prosperity and industrial survival,¡± IP experts and policy-makers concluded during the Global IPR Seminar held by the EU Chamber of Commerce in Korea on October 10th in Seoul, Korea.


EUCCK to host IPR Exhibition at Seoul City Hall  
 
Oct.29-31, Seoul-EUCCK IPR Committee members and sponsors in addition to award certificates. The EUCCK IPR Committee is hosting an exhibition of the most outstanding posters submitted by elementary, junior and high school students across the nation on the 29-31 of October at the Seoul City Hall Square. Judges consisted of IPR Committee members reviewed the essays and posters on IPR Protection and selected 18 students with the most creative and well thought out essays and posters. The students will be receiving a total of 2.8 million KRW in scholarships contributed by the EUCCK members and selected sponsors.

 
EUCCK, Demonstrating IPR Awareness in Counterfeit Markets  
 
Oct.29-31, Seoul- To raise awareness on how IPR violations is a criminal activity, the EUCCK IPR Committee, with the support of the Korea National Police Agency, will provide information and distribute fliers on the illegality of purchasing counterfeit goods one-by-one to visitors of major counterfeit markets - Itaewon, Dongdaemoon, Namdaemoon and Myungdong from October 29-31, 2007.

 
EUCCK-EU FTA Negotiators Meeting  
 
Oct.18, Seoul-The EUCCK sectorial committees and the EU FTA negotiators met in Seoul during the final day of the fourth round of FTA talks. Although it is too early to predict the outcome of the talks still in progress, the EU FTA negotiators for IPR portion of the talks with the Korean side is going in a positive direction. In general though, Ignacio Garcia Bercero, the EU Cheif negotiator stated "We have achieved some progress but no breakthroughs," to the reporters in Seoul.

 
 
Tobacco Industry: Best Practices Exchange Against Illicit Trade  
 
Today, the Korean tobacco market is the 8th largest in the world with a total market volume of 13 billion USD. Among the major market players in Korea, British American Tobacco (BAT), the second largest tobacco company in the world, described the key to successful brand protection during the ¡°Best Practices Exchange on Industrial and Copyright Protection¡± workshop hosted by the EUCCK IPR Committee in Seoul.

 
 
Shanghai IP Administration: "Chinese Perspective on IP"  
 
Oct. 25, Seoul-While the World Trade Organization (WTO) expert panel is probing the US complaints against China on the government lack of IP protection, to many China is still an attractive market and a hot spot for foreign investors due to its sheer size and growth potential. Jia Song, IPR Specialist of the Policy and Law Department at the Shanghai Intellectual Property Adminsitration (SIPA) gave a talk to portray the Chinese perspective on IP, ¡°IP Protection in China: A View at the Development and Protection Status in Shanghai¡± during the IPR Seminar hosted by the EUCCK in Seoul.

MOFAT: The Fourth Round of Korea-EU FTA Negotiations to be Held
 
  The fourth round of Korea-EU FTA negotiations will be held in Seoul from October 15-17.

 
KCS: Sharp Drop in Export of Korean Counterfeit Products
 
  The Korea Customs Service(KCS) says that according to the analysis of the IPR-violating goods seized by Japan Customs in the 2nd quarter of 2007, the percentage of Korean counterfeit exports drastically decreased from 44.5%(accumulated in 2006) of the total seizures to 20.9%(accumulated in the 2nd quarter of 2007), which is 52% drop from 5,027 to 2,409 in terms of the number of seizure cases and 60% cut from 232,688 pieces to 93,877 pieces in terms of quantity.

 
KCS: A New Era of One-stop Import Clearance of Air Mail
 
  With the expansion of the Seoul Postal Customs located in Mokdong, Seoul into the Incheon Airport Postal Customs in Incheon International Airport on Oct. 29, the Korea Customs Service(KCS) plans to streamline the customs clearance process of international air mail drastically and provide more convenient, speedier and higher quality service to users.

EU-S. Korea Conclude 4th Round of FTA Talks : Progress in the IP Sector  
  The European Union and South Korean delegates conducted the fourth round of Free Trade Agreement talks from October 15-18, in Seoul, Korea.
Discussions carried out negotiations on tariff concessions on the service sector, goods, electronic commerce and country of origin.
Garcia Bercero, the chief negotiator of the EU did cite progress in the areas of IPR and services. In regards to the services sector, the Korean side suggested mutual recognition of professional qualifications instead of the EU¡¯s request for legal market opening.
