Oct. 29, Seoul - Winners of the EUCCK¡¯s 1st Essay and Poster Contest on the 'Importance of Intellectual Property Rights Protection' were awarded with scholarships and certificates during the opening ceremony of the EUCCK IPR Awards Ceremony and Exhibition on October 29, 2007 at the Seoul City Square. Supported by its member companies, the EUCCK IPR Committee, hosted the contest and exhibition to help raise awareness on industrial property and copyrights among elementary, junion and high school students across the country and eighteen students with the most outstanding Korean essays and art posters were selected by the group of judges consisted of EUCCK IPR Committee executive board members.


EUCCK Demonstrates IPR Awareness in Namdaemoon, Itaewon, Myungdong & Dongdaemoon  
 
Oct.29-31, Seoul - EUCCK and student volunteers conducted friendly demonstrations on the 'Importance of IPR Protection' in Myundong, Itaewon market, Namdaemoon market and Dongdaemoon market by handing out information brochures on the definition of IPR and the illegality of purchasing and selling counterfeit goods.

 
¡®3rd Competent Authorities Meeting on IPR¡¯  
 
Nov. 20, Seoul - The lack of effective enforcement against IPR infringements in Korea is still regarded as a main problem for many foreign investors in Korea. The Ministry of Justice in charge of the legal framework and enforcement related matters will meet with the EUCCK, American Chamber of Commerce in Korea , US Embassy to Korea, Japan External Trade Organization and the Embassy of Japan in Korea to discuss current problems and solutions to the trademark and copyright infringement problems on November 20, 2007 at the Seoul Club.

 
¡®EU-Korea Awards Ceremony¡¯  
 
Nov. 20, Seoul - EUCCK is hosting the 2nd annual EU-Korea Awards Ceremony to commemorate the Korean government agencies, EU companies and individuals who have contributed to economic relations and industrial development between the EU and Korea. Minimal efforts for efficient protection of IPR has been considered as a reason for nomination by the judges committee and so this year the Korea Customs Service was chosen to receive the award for ¡®Efficient Partner¡¯ for their efforts in the IPR sector. The Financial Supervisory Service and the Financial Supervisory Commission for the most ¡®Globalized Partner¡¯, and the Ministry of Science and Technology for most ¡®Responsible Partner¡¯. The ceremony will take place the at the Shilla Hotel from 11:00 to 14:30 on November 20, 2007.

 
Drawing Event on ¡®Innovation & Inventions¡¯  
 
Oct.29-31, Seoul - EUCCK IPR Committee invited the ¡®Donghwasok Children Nursery¡®, ¡®JoongAng Angel Nursery¡®, and the ¡®Chunsa Eurini Private Nursery¡® to the annual ¡®Drawing Event on Innovation & Inventions¡¯ to educate young children about using one's imagination to invent and create. Over the course of three days, the EUCCK taught nearly 128 children about the concept of innovation and the introduced why inventions and the protection of one¡¯s ideas and inventions are important.

 
 
IPR Talks: EUCCK-UK Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory  
 
Nov. 8, Seoul - While the Asia Task Form in the United Kingdom and the UK IP Office endorsed a proposal to develop an IP initiative aimed at fostering an understanding amongst local Asian businesses of the positive impacts and benefits of long term IP protection, the EUCCK IPR Committee member companies based in the UK and Yul Chon Law Firm, the legal counsel of the EUCCK IPR Committee met with Rt. Hon. John Hutton MP, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (Cabinet Minister) and the UK Embassy in Korea on November 8th in Seoul to explain the key IPR issues which are affecting foreign firms doing business in Korea and to examine how the UK¡¯s initiative and the local actions taken by the EUCCK can together implement the common goal of IPR protection in Asia.

Oct.10, Seoul - ¡°WIPO finds that in a macroeconomic level, the patent system has not had a major impact on economic growth, but in a microeconomic level, innovation and patents are becoming an important collaborative element contributing to economic growth,¡± said Dimiter Gantchev, acting director of the Creative Industries Division of the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). ¡°Economic approach to IPR acts as a catalyst for government policy initiatives and provides concrete and verifiable evidence, but the IP sector can perform better only in coopration with the stakeholders,¡± he added during his interview with the EUCCK Infomag after the Global IPR Seminar held in Seoul.

KIPO Commission Sangwoo Chun announced a Career Development Program for KIPO officials so that they can enhance their personal capacity and to strengthen teamwork. This initiative is different from other actions as KIPO plans to compensate officials work upon their acheivement, compared to the past in which most officials were awared upon their rank and seniority.

EU-S.Korea Hold 5th Round of FTA Talks  
  The EU and South Korea will hold fifth round of talks in Brussels from November 19th to the 23rd in which officials are said to be focusing on tariffs in the agricultural and automobile sector. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, "Details cannot be revealed, but in addition to holding onto current tariffs, other options like lowering import duties and implementing flexible tariff rates are being considered." Experts say South Korea will try to retain current tariff rates on sensitive agricultural goods at the upcoming free trade pact talks with the European Union (EU).
