It is a privilege for the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Korea¡¯s Intellectual Property Rights Committee to introduce the first edition of the IPR E-Newsletter for the year 2008. Recognizing that the protection of IPR is vital to sound economies and the health and safety of consumers, the EUCCK IPR Committee will continue to lead the European Business Community in the fight against counterfeiting and piracy.


EU-Korea FTA Update  
 
EU and S Korea to Continue FTA Talks: Jan.28 - Feb.1
The sixth round of EU-Korea Free Trade talks is planned to take place from January 28th to February 1st according to the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This is a week later than scheduled as the EU and Korea decided they need more time to review the revised offers.

 

Crackdowns Most Important, Enforcement Implementation Still A Problem  
  Jan. 2008, Seoul - Korean prosecutors claim The foreign business community in Korea called for more cooperation between governments and private sectors to advance IPR protection in Korea. The council members of the EU, US, Japan and Korea had concerted views on the need to implement more frequent and stronger crackdowns to prevent intergovernmental trade issues as well as to assist Korea in successfully entering a knowledge based society. But how to go about this matter is another issue.

 
¡®Incheon Customs & EUCCK Organize IP Training Course for Customs Officers  
 
The Incheon Airport Customs and the EUCCK IPR Committee jointly organized a IP Training Session at the Incheon Customs Office during the last quarter of 2007 for Customs officers in charge of cargo inspection and IPR related matters on brand protection and how to discriminate between counterfeit and genuine brands, which are often imported and exported. Participation by the Customs was enthusiastic.

 
 
Key Crackdown Cases of IPR Violators  
 
Large Scale Violators of the Trademarks Act Exposed, Arrested and Prosecuted in 2007. The Seoul District Prosecutors Office conducted a crackdown, in which a trademark violator, who had used the names of employees to sell dozens of counterfeit items, such as apparels, bags, wallets, etc. of famous brands such as "Chanel", "Gucci", "Louis Vuitton", and others. worth around 12.6 billion won (actual sales price) was arrested and prosecuted.

Foreign Investors Meet Myung Bak Lee, ROK President Elect  
  Jan.15, Seoul -
The EU Chamber of Commerce in Korea, American Chamber of Commerce in Korea and the Seoul Japan Club organized a new year¡¯s reception with President-elect Lee Myung-bak who made a speech about his future government policies and the steps the country will be taking. Considering his CEO background, some of the foreign investors positively referred to his English PowerPoint presentation as a convincing ¡°sales performance.¡±
