IPR Newsletter 2008, April

Seoul, South Korea- Geographical indication (GI) has emerged as one of the contentious issue of prominent debate in bilateral trade agreements between trading partners around the world. This growing attention is fitting, as GIs are a key feature on many agricultural and food product labels and are of valuable business interests that play an integral role in promoting trade, brand building and market stability. Given the importance of the agricultural market in South Korea, it is important for the country to improve the marketability and competitiveness of Korean agricultural products and processed foods by improving the understanding and making systematic use of the geographical indications rules, rules of origin and labeling.
