June 28, Seoul - ¡°A substantive IPR chapter should naturally include enhanced protection for the GIs of Korea and Europe. There are therefore common grounds between EU and Korea to be developed further through the FTA. It is a question of good faith, good economics and good sense,¡± said Brian McDonald, Ambassador of the European Commission Delegation to the Republic of Korea during the opening ceremony of the EU-Korea IPR Seminar: ¡°Roadmap for Geographical Indications Protection¡± hosted by the EUCCK IPR Committee on June 26th in Seoul, Korea.


Ian Woodcock, Elected Chairman of the EUCCK IPR Committee  
  Ian Woodcock, representative director of PUMA Korea has been elected as the chairman of the EUCCK IPR Committee. ¡°IPR is very important to many companies including PUMA and I hope our committee as a group can effectively address IPR issues and petition for greater commitments by local, national and international officials in the enforcement and protection of IPR,¡±says Mr. Woodcock.

 
EUCCK-KIPO Meeting on "Online IPR Infringement"  
 
The Korea IP Office and the EUCCK IPR Committee will be holding the second working level meeting on ¡°Online IPR Infringement¡± during the third week of July to follow up on the some of the discussions on the possibility of ¡®establishing a damage relief system against online trademark infringement or revising the current legal framework to provide a stronger legal basis for trademark owners to file civil suits against online service providers and to apply for provisional disposition against ISPs which oversee the transaction of counterfeit goods distributed on their sites. Establishing a separate private-public organization that focuses on handling online infringement cases and co-organizing public awareness activities were mentioned during the last meeting held in May.

 
EUCCK Requested for Stronger Motivation to Tackle Counterfeiting at SPPO IPR Mtg  
 
March 18, Seoul - Hans Bernhard Merforth, Acting President of the EU Chamber of Commerce in Korea and Seon Young Hwang, member of the EUCCK IPR Committee and legal manager of Adidas Korea delivered the keynote speech and presentation during the IPR Seminar hosted by the UK Embassy in Seoul, to deliver stance and problems counterfeiting and piracy have on the European business community. Trademark infringement was recognized as a major problem businesses share, according to the delegates who participated in the seminar. EUCCK says that approximately 20 percent of goods sold on Internet shopping malls and e-marketplaces infringe trademark or copyrights.

KIPO opens an integrated internet service to protect intellectual property rights
 
  June 11 - The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner: Jung-Sik Koh) is starting an integrated internet service to allow companies and inventors easy access to protect their intellectual property rights. This efficient service will be found at http://ippc.kipo.go.kr.

Korean Supreme Court Reverses the Korean Patent Court's Ruling  
  This month, the Korean Supreme Court reversed the Korean Patent Court's Ruling which upheld the validity of the FormFactor Patent. According to FormFactor, Inc. the Korea Supreme Court issued an oral ruling finding that 12 claims of FormFactor's Korean Patent No.252457 are invalid, and remanding the case back to the Korean Patent Court for further proceedings consistent with the ruling.
