Recently, the Korean government is showing great efforts to answer the needs of our trade barrier issues, including the IPR problems the European business community faces, today. The IPR Committee hopes to work more vigorously in 2006 by cooperating with the Korean government to strengthen IPR protection in Korea.

 

New Parties To WIPO-Administered Treaties in 2005  
  The year 2005 saw a significant number of accessions or ratifications to treaties administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO and the entry into force of a new international instrument relating formal patent procedures reflecting continuing commitment by member states in enhancing intellectual property legislation at the national level.

 
EU Support Against Counterfeiting and Piracy
The European Commission has welcomed the European Parliament's vote in favour of a Directive on the enforcement of intellectual and industrial property rights, such as copyright and related rights, trademarks, designs or patents.


 
U.S.-E.U. Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights
The U.S.-E.U. Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement held its first meeting on January 26-27, 2006 to begin planning strategies for closer cooperation between the United States and EU on intellectual property rights (IPR) enforcement issues.

Protection for Computer Programs to Be Tightened  
  Those caught infringing on the copyrights of computer programs by illegally copying or distributing them can face up to five years of imprisonment. Previously, the maximum sentence was three years in jail.
 
 
3rd EBO Regional IPR Meeting, Hanoi, Vietnam  
  European Business Organization (EBO) Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) meeting will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam on March 16-17, 2006. This meeting is a follow up of the 2nd EBO Regional meeting held in Seoul last year. EBO representatives from Korea, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan

In commemoration of the 24th International Customs Day, Yun Kap Sung, the Commissioner of the Korea Customs Service (KCS) invited officials from the government and foreign business circle to celebrate International Customs Day and discuss various customs and intellectual property rights related issues on January 25th at the Imperial Palace Hotel, Seoul.

 
Korea Customs Service Intensifies IPR Enforcement
 
  Korea Customs Service kicked off the ¡®Special Counterfeit Goods Investigations¡¯ (Special Investigations) meeting at the Seoul Customs Service, February 1, 2006. Mr. Dae Bok Lee, the director general of the Investigation Bureau of KCS announced that the special counterfeit goods crackdown operations will be conducted from February 1 to April 30 (Level 1) in major markets and shopping areas across Korea. With 98 task force teams consisted of 446 special agents, the Korean government will investigate bonded warehouses and export related counterfeit goods manufacturing facilities/dealers.
