Gwacheon, August 30-The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Committee of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Korea (EUCCK)addressed urgent IPR enforcement related issues that is harming the European business community and provided recommendations to cope with such problems during the¡®Competent Authorities Meeting on IPR Protection¡¯ hosted by the Ministry of Justice on August 30th.

This meeting was organized as the stepping stone for IPR experts from not only the investigative agencies of Korea, but also from the foreign embassies and chambers of commerce to discuss various targets and methods for effective IPR protection and to seek together appropriate ways to protect IPR.

 
Warning Over Counterfeit Cigarettes  
 
An initiative to combat the proliferation of counterfeit goods - including cigarettes - has been gaining momentum in Korea and elsewhere.

Some of the more prominent news in the press recently involves cheap cigarettes containing a higher level of cancer-causing chemicals being sold on the streets and black markets of Korea. According to the police, most of the cigarettes sold in these areas are counterfeit. Police officials say a majority of the alleged tax free cigarettes brought in from duty free shops are in fact counterfeit but sold as the real thing.
 

IPR Committee Luncheon Meeting with the Ministry of Justice  
 
The EUCCK IPR Committee is hosting a luncheon meeting on "Protecting the Creativity, Innovation and Security of Korea's Foreign Business Community" with Mr. Cheol Kyu Hwang, senior prosecutor of the Ministry of Justice's International Criminal Division on September 19th at the Westin Chosul Hotel.

Seoul, Sep. 15- The European Union Chamber of Commerce in Korea and the Korea Customs Service (KCS) discussed areas for further cooperation like in depth information exchange on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) related matters at the EUCCK headquarters.




 
Senior citizens and Children are to Benefit by Counterfeit Goods  
 
Seoul, Sep. 6- Due to the excessive amount of counterfeit items seized during enforcement operations, the Investigation Surveillance Division (ISD) of Korea Customs Service organized a meeting entitled ¡°Advanced IPR Protection Strategy¡± the rightholders and other government and non-governmental agencies to exchange ideas on how to handle costs for disposing or recycling seized counterfeit items accumalatede over the enforcement period.
 
 
Strict IPR Regime is Singapore's Strength  
 
¡°Singapore¡¯s IPR-related legislation falls in line with standards mandated by the World Trade Organization as the country is moving rapidly into a knowledge-based economy,¡± said the executive director of the European Chamber of Singapore during the ¡®2nd European Business Organizations (EBOs) Regional Meeting Against Counterfeiting and Piracy¡¯ held in Seoul, Korea last year.
 
 
GUCCI Voted Online Consumer¡¯s Favorite Luxury Brand  
 
A recent poll of 5,661 people conducted by an online marketplace put Gucci at the top as the online consumer¡¯s favorite luxury brand with 22.1 percent. All age groups from teenagers to those in their 70s loved the Italian leather goods brand. Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Burberry and Christian Dior followed with 15.9 percent, 13.2 percent, 7.4 percent and 6.2 percent. Other names in the top 20 included Cartier, Ralph Lauren, Ferragamo, Prada, Versace, Armani, Bulgari, Fendi, Bally, Escada, Etro, Celine, Hermes, Coach and Ermenegildo Zegna.

 
 
Mid-Year - Counterfeit & Piracy Report by the KNPA  
  A number of trends have been discovered from the enforcement operations conducted by the Korea National Police Agency, that is undergoing the Intensive Enforcement operations against IPR Violations' until the end of next month. Korea National Police Agency announced a list of the most counterfeited brands in Korea based upon the intelligence gathered during the enforcement period.

  Starting this September, KIPO (Commissioner: JUN, Sang Woo) is planning to launch an online service that provides information on material patents, after their exclusive rights have expired. This information will be provided to related industries such as drug companies.
 
KIPO: Core technology to establish a crisis prevention system
 
  On July 14th, KIPO (Commissioner: JUN, Sang Woo) published a white paper covering the contents and accomplishments of ¡®Brand Support Projects for Local Government¡¯, which the agency has been promoting since 2002 to activate local economies by creating intellectual properties.
 
KIPO: The 24-hour electronic application of KIPOnet system
 
  In the 18th during the UFL period, KIPO (Commissioner: JUN, Sang Woo) launched a simulation training to test and evaluate how the office¡¯s Crisis Recovery Center (located in the KIPO Seoul office) takes over major tasks usually handled by the Computer Center. The basis for this simulation was that normal system operation was interrupted due to a crisis such as earthquake, fire, or cyber terrorism.
 
Seoul Customs House: Signing MOUs for IPR protection
 
  Signing parties are Interpark, Interpark G-market, Daum onket, "mple online" and GS-estore. These five companies are ranking the 1st to 5th in terms of the market share in the domestic online market, except Auction with which Seoul Customs already signed an MOU last April 14. Their combined sales account for 45% of the total sales in Korea's internet market.
