December 13, Seoul - Private and public sector representatives of the EU, US and Japan joined forces at the '2nd Competent Authorities Meeting on IPR Protection', a body set up to improve the protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in Korea. Bringing together the Ministry of Justice, Supreme Prosecutor's Office, Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, Delegation of the European Commission, US Embassy, Japanese Embassy, European Union Chamber of Commerce in Korea, American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, Japan External Trade Organization and the Seoul Japan Club, the IPR council discussed solutions to the IPR abuses faced by many foreign businesses in Korea.

 
Copyright Law to be Revised  
 
According to a recent announcement made the Legislative Administration Committee (LAC) of the National Assembly (NA), the copyright law will be revised by early next year after the NA¡¯s plenary sessions are held. The revised copyright law will impose criminal punishment against copyright infringers even without the direct complaint by the copyright owner.

November 2006 Parallel Import Trend Report  
 
The following is a summary of the parallel import report for November 2006. The total amount of European PI goods imported during last month was 31,151,049 with an import frequency (showing how many parallel importers exist for a brand concerned) of 5,639.
 
 
EBO Partners Launch the Asian Regional IPR Protection Project  
 
An opening meeting (conference call) to launch the beginning of the ¡®European Business Organization¡¯s Asian Regional IPR Protection Project¡¯ took place on December 14, 2006 with EU Chambers in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Czech Republic and the European Union Korea Industrial Cooperation Agency ( EUKICA ), key partners of the Asia Invest Programme, a two-year project aimed to facilitate the creation of a regional EBO network capable of collectively addressing IPR problems in Asia.

 
 
Louis Vuitton Joins the IPR Committee  
 

The EUCCK IPR Committee welcomes Louis Vuitton (LV) Korea as a new executive board member. Established in 1854 and currently owned by the French based holding company LVMH, LV is a producer of pret-a-porter and leather goods, highly regarded among consumers in the fashion world.

 
 
EU-Japan, Mutual Interests to Defend Creativity and Innovation  
 
December 12 - Strategic partners in the political and economic arena, EU-Japan relations are steadily developing especially due to their mutual interest to defend intellectual property rights (IPR). Hirohisa Soma , director of the Intellectual Property Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan, spoke to the EUCCK about Japan-EU Joint Initiative for the Enforcement of IPR in Asia, Japan¡¯s progress during the recent years in protecting IPR as well as emerging problems that both EU, Korea and Japan share alike.

 
 
MOFAT:Outcomes of the 5th Round of Korea-United States Free Trade Agreement Talks
 
  1. The fifth round of negotiations for the Korea-United States Free Trade Agreement (FTA) took place in Big Sky, Montana from December 4 to 8, 2006.

2. In this round of negotiations, the Korean delegation stressed to the U.S. side the critical importance of making progress in the trade remedies sector in order to advance the overall negotiations.

 
KIPO:Patent classes expand to nationwide science and engineering campuses!!
 
  Patent classes for university students majoring in science and engineering are expanding to nationwide campuses. According to KIPO (Commissioner: Sang-Woo Jun), 26 nationwide universities opened more than 30 patent classes in their regular curriculum during the 2nd semester this year to provide patent education.

 
KIPO: Stop applying for imitative trademarks!
 
  Under the revised Trademark Act that will expand the subject of trademark protection, new types of visually recognizable trademarks will be protected in the future. These visually recognizable trademarks include those made only with coloring, motion trademarks, and hologram trademarks. imitative trademarks that are similar or identical to other trademarks will not be registered. This revision represents a significant change.

 
KIPO:Cross-working experience for examiners and researchers
 
  KIPO (Commissioner Sang-Woo Jun) and the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM, President: PARK, Hwa Young) agreed to assign their examiners and researchers to each other¡¯s organization, allowing examiners and researchers to have daily cross-working experience starting in November.

 
KIPO:Korea and Japan agree on the launch date of the ¡®Patent Examination Highway
 
  Commissioner Sang-Woo Jun of KIPO and Makoto Nakajima of the Japan Patent Office held the 18th Heads Meeting between KIPO and JPO in Tokyo, Japan on November 27th (Monday), 2006. During the meeting, the two commissioners agreed to launch the ¡®Patent Examination Highway¡¯ between the offices starting April 1st, 2007.
 
KIPO: Shortcut provided for acquiring foreign patents in advance
 
  Starting from November 25th, KIPO (Commissioner: JUN, Sang Woo) is planning to provide an English version of patent examination information to examiners in foreign patent offices. Using the internet, the service includes documents related to the examination process.

EUCCK 20th Anniversary luncheon and celebrating the 1st EU-Korea Awards  
 
In a glittering ceremony, following the 20th Anniversary Special Luncheon with Prime Minister,H.E. HAN, MYEONG SOOK, the 1st EU-Korea 2006 Awards were announced and distributed to the proud recepients.

The event represents an important milestone for EUCCK in the overall strategy of raising the profile of the EU business community in Korea. The Awards will be an annual feature of the Chamber's activities, and EUCCK will also be looking at increasing the categories in the future.
