January 30, Seoul - To curb the damage of Internet piracy hurting various industries including but not limited to games, software, music and film, the National Assembly approved a revised copyright bill initiated by Sang Ho Woo, member of the 17th National Assembly and the Culture & Tourism Standing Committee to strengthen the protection of copyright materials on the Internet by strictly controlling Internet file transferring and enhancing the liability of Internet Service Providers (ISP).


3rd Annual Door-Knock Mission  
 

The IPR Committee will participate in the EU Chamber of Commerce in Korea's 3rd annual 'Door-Knock Mission' to Brussels on March 20th~21st to meet with the authorities of the European Commission, European Parliament and selected industry associations to present Korea¡¯s regulatory and trade barriers on IPR.

 
New IPR Committee Vice-Chairman Elected  
 
Robin Pak, Louis Vuitton Korea¡¯s Legal Counsel has been elected as the vice-chairman of the IPR Committee in recognition of his broad experience and active interest to take on a hands-on role to support the committee chairman, members, and the EUCCK secretariat regarding the committee¡¯s yearly activities.

 
25th International Customs Day  
 

January 26, Seoul-The EU Chamber of Commerce in Korea joined Korea Customs Service commissioner Seong Yun Kab, at a reception to celebrate the 25th International Customs Day.

 
January 07' & December 06' Parallel Import Trend Report  
 
The following is a summary of the parallel import report for January 2007 and December 2006. The total amount of European PI goods imported during the month of January 2007 was 2,133,670 with an import frequency of 6577. In addition, a total quantity of 102,563,848 with an import frequency of 5,298 was recorded in December 2006.
 
 
EBOs Taiwan & Korea Conduct Operations Exchange Program  
 

Seoul, February 8-With the financial support of the Enterprise Directorate-General of the European Commission, the European Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (EUCCT) and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Korea (EUCCK) conducted an ¡®Operations Exchange Program¡¯ in Seoul to enhance cooperation and to increase the knowledge of duties between the staff members of both institutions through the information exchange on committee (i.e. Intellectual Property Rights, Automobile, Cosmetics, Food & Beverage Committees, etc) activities, government networks, specific services for European enterprises in Taiwan and Korea.

 
 
Mercedes Benz: New Executive Board Member of the IPR Committee  
 
The EU Chamber welcomes Mercedes Benz as a new executive board member of the IPR Committee. Today, every product and every industry is vulnerable to IPR infringement. Counterfeit goods have gone beyond fake leather goods or DVDs and now include fake batteries, steel, electric machinery, snacks and auto parts.

 
 
Seoul Customs Installs Website to Monitor Trademark Violators  
  The Seoul Customs established an IPR Protection Site (http://seoul.customs.go.kr) to monitor IPR infringement cases together with relevant organizations, right holders and Internet shopping malls.

 
 
KIPO: Korea's Faster Patent Examination Reaches World Class Speed
 
  With an average 10 months for the patent examination period for the first action as of the end of 2006, KIPO (Commissioner: Sang-Woo Jun) has succeeded in reducing the first examination period of a patent down to 10 months.
 
KIPO: Expands its assistance for developing countries
 
  KIPO(Commissioner: Sang-Woo Jun) is planning to greatly expand its assistance for developing countries. According to KIPO, the budget for the fourth annual term of WIPO Korea Funds-in-Trust, which will begin in the second half of 2007, will increase drastically to 600 million KRW (625 thousand USD), to meet the increasing needs for development assistance in the intellectual property field, and the recent policy of the Korean government to increase its official development assistance.
 
KIPO: Global enterprises rush to KIPO to request patent examination
 
  As domestic/foreign confidence towards the examination capability of KIPO has increased, foreign global enterprises, such as Microsoft, 3M, and Thomson, are actively requesting international searches to KIPO.

 
KIPO, SIPO and JPO establish a roadmap for patent cooperation
 
  On Monday, December 4th, 2006, Commissioner Sang-Woo Jun of KIPO participated in the ¡®6th Trilateral Policy Dialogue Meeting among 3 offices held at Beijing, China. In the meeting, the three commissioners agreed on ¡®reducing work burden by mutually sharing the results of examination,¡¯ which is the midterm goal of the roadmap for patent cooperation among the three offices.

 
KIPO:Symbol marks become simpler, trademarks become more extended
 
  Due to the unification of companies¡¯ image, company logos are becoming simpler. As logos become simpler, trademarks representing individual products are becoming more extended.

  The Korea Customs Service(KCS) designated additional 15 companies including LG PHILIPS LCD as ¡ºGood Customs Partner¡»on Dec. 26th.
 
KCS: Tariff Classification, to be drastically modified starting 2007 Date
 
  In an effort to reflect changes in the international trade environment including emergence of new cutting-edge products and increasing interest in transactions of environment and drug-related goods, the World Customs Organization(WCO) drastically modified the customs tariff schedule through the 4th revision of the HS.

Woong Ryul Tae, New Commissioner of Seoul Main Customs  
  Woong Ryul Tae has been appointed as the new commissioner of the Seoul Main Customs since late January 2007. Prior to his tenure with the Seoul Main Customs, Mr. Tae was the director general of the Audit & Policy Bureau of the Korea Customs Service, Commissioner of the Daeju Province Customs and was the director of the Border Control Division of the Ministry of Finance and Economy.




 
Viet Nam to join WTO  
  GENEVA - Viet Nam informed the World Trade Organization (WTO) on December 12, 2006 that it has ratified its membership agreement. It will now become the WTO¡¯s 150th member on January 11, 2007, according to a press release by the Organization.

WTO members negotiating the terms of Viet Nam¡¯s membership completed their task on October 26, 2006 by accepting the documents spelling out Viet Nam¡¯s commitments and rights.
