March 23, Seoul-The Intellectual Property Rights Committee of the EU Chamber of Commerce in Korea organized a general meeting with H.E. Brian McDonald Ambassador of the European Commission Delegation to Korea, Jae Ho Park, Head of the Cheon An Local Customs and Bong Hyuk Bang, Senior Prosecutor of the Suwon Prosecutors Office to address the growing problem of counterfeit goods traded in local provincial areas. Due to the severe enforcement activities recently conducted by major customs offices in Incheon and Pusan, importers of counterfeit items have diverted their designated routes to local customs offices, where the lack of government resources and weak enforcement have pushed for such IPR crimes to accelerate. The EUCCK members urged for more attention to be centered on investigating the import, export, production, storage and trade of counterfeit goods in these provincial areas.


EUCCK Completes 2007 Open Door Mission to Brussels  
 
March 20-21, Brussels-The EU Chamber of Commerce in Korea successfully completed the 3rd annual Open Door Mission, led by Secretary General Jean Jacques Grauhar and President Carl Johan Hagman. The EUCCK IPR committee met with the high-level officials of the European Commission Directorate General for Trade, European Parliament and industry groups including the European Brands Association, International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and Business Europe and introduced the current trends, recent developments and obstacles of Korea¡¯s IP framework.

 
Ministry of Justice Meeting on 'IPR Enforcement'  
 
The IPR Committee will take part in the 3rd Consultation Meeting on IPR Enforcement with the Ministry of Justice, Supreme Prosecutors Office, and the Seoul Public Prosecutors Office to discuss the current obstacles, recent developments and future prospects of Korea's IPR framework during the same week of the first round of EU-Korea FTA discussions.
 

EUCCK Forecasts Impact of KORUS FTA  
 
April 10, Seoul-As South Korea and the United States of America concluded a free trade agreement on April 2nd, the industry watchers of the EUCCK are coming out with forecasts on how much impact the trade pact will have on the European Union-Korea FTA negotiations. The IPR Committee including other sectorial committees re-drafted the EUCCK¡¯s FTA position papers and held a private meeting with the EU Commission to Korea to brief H.E. Ambassador Brian McDonald of the remaining and unresolved trade barrier issues.
 
 
EBA Ukraine Creates IPR Working Group  
 
Seoul, April 16 - "The Intellectual Property Working Group was recently established to help safeguard European brand owners in Ukraine from counterfeiting and piracy," the delegation of the European Business Association in Ukraine said during their visit to the EUCCK. Under the chairmanship of Volodymyr Tkachenko of Kraft Foods Ukraine, the EBA delegation says the IPR Working Group intends to work closely with the government agencies to update IPR laws so that they are in line with international standards.
 
 
Jinro Ballantines Pernod Ricard Joins the IPR Committee  
 
The EUCCK IPR Committee welcomes Jinro Ballantines-Pernod Ricarad, the world¡¯s second largest liquor company, as a new executive board member. The maker of premium and ultra premium brands, such as Ballantines, Chivas Regal, Royal Salute, Imperial, Jacob¡¯s Creek, Wyndham, Perrier Jouet and Mumm, Jinro Ballantines-Pernod Ricard joined the IPR Committee to collaborate with other businesses across sectors,share learnings, identify new solutions to the problem, build greater awareness of the issue as well as to provide a unified partner for government agencies.


 
 
IFPI :"S. Korea Needs to Act on Anti-Piracy Enforcement & Education"  
  March 21, Brussels- ¡°The global traffic of illegal CDs value at 4.5 billion euros and an estimated 20 billion songs were illegally swapped or downloaded worldwide,¡± said Yolande Smits, senior adviser at International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) during a bilateral meeting with the EUCCK IPR Committee in Brussels. ¡°South Korea is one of IFPI¡¯s 10 priority countries where enforcement efforts by governments need to be stepped up.¡±

S.Korea Concludes FTA with the US  
  Official talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between South Korea and the U.S. have been completed and now attention is concentrated on possible trade negotiations between Korea and the European Union.
Presently, South Korea has already established three FTAs with Chile, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), and Singapore. The nation is now waiting for the approval by the Korean National Assembly for the FTA it has just concluded with the US. An additional four FTAs - with Canada, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), India, and Mexico - have been in negotiations, and South Korea is preparing to lauch trade talks with four other economies; namely the EU. In addition to China, the Latin American Mercosur bloc, and the Middle East¡¯s Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Back in 2004, Korea halted FTA negotiations with Japan, because of disagreements pertaining to market access among other issues.
