June 28, Seoul- In light of the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement talks and the official signing of the Korea-US FTA between trade ministers, the Intellectual Property Rights Committee (www.ipr.eucck.org) of the EU Chamber of Commerce in Korea invited Jae Hyun Ahn, Industrial Property Policy Team Deputy Director General of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, who spoke about the implications and future prospects of Korea¡¯s industrial property system upon the implementation of the KORUS FTA. ¡°The advanced IPR system obtained through the FTA will help promote foreign and domestic investment, contribute to the protection of Korean IP overseas as well as nurture innovation and competition¡± he said to the EUCCK members. KIPO stated the conclusion of the KORUS FTA and the positive talks with the EU will accelerate FTA negotiations with other major economic blocs.

EUCCK - MOJ Agree on Mutual Support for IPR Protection  
 
July 19, Seoul- The EUCCK delegation met with the Sung Ho Kim, Minister of Justice and relevant authorities to further enhance cooperation for IPR protection as well as to discuss future IPR related plans between both sides. Lead by Carl Hagman EUCCK President, the EUCCK reminded the MOJ about the importance of re-instigating the IPR Council Meeting on Enforcement as well as the need to establish a direct and immediate link to exchange daily information on IPR related crimes, in which the MOJ¡¯s International Criminal Affairs Bureau will look into the feasibility of establishing such a mechanism. In addition, the Minister of Justice agreed to positively review the EUCCK¡¯s request to speak at the upcoming EUCCK General meeting on the MOJ¡¯s policies pertaining to IPR, legal/criminal affairs, social protection and correction.
 
Genuine-Counterfeit Comparison Exhibition  
 
June 24, Seoul- Wolfgang Slawinski, EUCCK Vice-President, extended the EUCCK¡¯s support to Yoon Kab Seong, Korea Customs Service Commissioner, who hosted the annual Genuine-Counterfeit Comparison Exhibition in Samsungdong, Seoul by attending and participating in the Opening Ceremony held last Tuesday. Once again this year, IPR Committee members contributed their resources and more for this three day event aimed to raise awareness on IPR.
 
EUCCK Launches Essay and Poster Contest on IPR for Korean Students  
 
To help Korea¡¯s younger generation understand the definition and influence of Intellectual Property Rights on the economy and national development, the EUCCK is hosting a ¡®Essay and Poster Contest on IPR¡¯for elementary, junior and high school students. As a part of the EUCCK¡¯s Global IPR Campaign, the EUCCK will provide scholarships and awards to the winners on October 10th as well as exhibit the winning essays and posters in front of the City Hall yard during the last week of August.
 
EUCCK: Parallel Import Goods Report for June 2006  
 
During the month of June 2007, 26,567,020 European Parallel Import good were cleared through Customs with a total import frequency of 6381. In terms of the detailed analysis by goods, leather goods, garments and footwear had the largest amount of parallel goods imported with a total quantity of 188438, 115027 and 45648, respectively.
 
 
EUCCK Members Raising Awareness to Combat Counterfeiting and Piracy  
 
June 23-24, Seoul- ¡°Changing the mindset of consumers who do not fully understand the illegality involved in purchasing a counterfeit or pirated item is our Committee¡¯s main priority for this year,¡± said Robin Pak, Vice-Chairman of the EUCCK IPR Committee. As part of the committee¡¯s mission to raise awareness on the importance protecting IPR, members of the EUCCK IPR Committee members contributed their time and resources to help the authorities of the Korea Customs Service prepare the annual ¡®Genuine-Counterfeit Comparison Exhibition¡¯ held at the Coex Mall in Samsundong, Seoul.
 
 
Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan Supports EUCCK's Global IPR Campaign  
 

July 25, Seoul- Sharing a broad commonality of interests pertaining to the effective and appropriate protection IPR in connection to the liberalization of trade and investment, the EUCCK welcomed Hirohisa Soma, director of the IPR Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan and the Japanese Embassy Delegation, who met with the EUCCK secretariat to discuss recent IPR policies as well as to reaffirm its cooperation for the EUCCK Global IPR Campaign to be held in October 10th in Seoul.
 
 
Development of technologies related to anti-static circuits in semiconductors
 
  According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (Commissioner: Sang-Woo Jun), the number of patent applications related to anti-static circuits in semiconductor chips reached its highest number (114 applications) in 1998. The number gradually decreased to reach an annual average of 33 in both 2002 and 2003.
 
KIPO:Submit your priority documents online!
 
  Patent applicants who claim priority for applications between the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner: Sang-Woo Jun) and the European Patent Office (EPO) will no longer need to turn in their priority documents to the patent office. KIPO announced that priority documents will be exchanged online with EPO starting in July.

  Thanks to the simplification of application documents and the new functions for writing documents, filing patent applications online is expected to be easier and more convenient.
 
KIPO:¡°Paying patent fees quickly and conveniently with a ¡®click¡¯¡±
 
  Starting July 1st, a new e-payment service allows patent customers more convenience in paying for their patent fees without visiting banks or accessing payment websites.
 
KCS:Import cargo tracking and clearance status info Service Improves
 
  The Korea Customs Service(KCS) says that customs information service provided by its Client-oriented Logistics Information System or CLIS is resulting in considerable improvement in logistics management of im/exporting companies, quality of customs service, operational efficiency of both customs and companies, etc.
 
KCS: Commissioner, present at the WCO Council
 
  Commissioner of the Korea Customs Service(KCS), Dr. Seong Yun-kap, attended the 109/110th Council Sessions of the World Customs Organization(WCO) held in Brussels, Belgium on June 28~30, to discuss recent major issues in the customs administration with heads of customs authorities from 171 WCO members and get a report on the activities and discussion results of the WCO over the past one year.

EU-Korea Conducts Second Round of FTA Talks  
  The European Union and South Korea conducted the second round of talks over a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) from July 16-20, in Brussels, Belgium, in which the European negotiators led by Ignacio Garcia Bercero demanded stronger IPR enforcement mechanisms and the introduction of Artist¡¯s Resale Right and Public Performance Compensation Rights.
